L'Apparence et l'Abîme est un projet européen basé à Berlin où six artistes d'origine allemande (est /ouest) suédoise et russe se sont rencontrés. Bien que leurs parcours artistiques soient très différents, ces artistes font partie d'une génération qui a fait l'expérience de la dissolution des systèmes politiques et économiques pendant les années 80/90. Sans traits illustratifs, les objets, les dessins, les photographies, les peintures et les vidéos présentées font allusion à ce contexte. L'Apparence et l'abîme propose des travaux artistiques qui partagent une fascination pour le fragmentaire et son potentiel allégorique. L'exposition comporte des œuvres qui sont matériellement simples et plutôt fragiles, assumant cependant une évocation ironique de la beauté. Nous pourrions penser que cette modestie physique est la seule forme appropriée pour réfléchir sur un monde immergé dans un drame imagé, où les conflits intenses abondent. Ce que nous semblait bien connu réapparaît de façon traduite, déformée et reconstruite dans L'Apparence et l'abîme. Les positions artistiques présentées ici racontent la recherche des structures signifiantes, d'un procès qui peut amener à des résultats imprévisibles, et même au naufrage probable. L'Apparence et l'Abîme est la deuxième partie de UNITED ISLANDS TOUR 2006 (Amsterdam-Paris-Berlin), une coopération d'espaces d'art indépendants CAPRI Berlin, P//AKT Amsterdam et Immanence, Paris.

“Berlin character“ of L'Apparence et l'abîme precisely derives from the fact that the artists included here have a very varied, international background and work with different media. They share their generation's experience of dissolving political systems, although the individuals witnessed those in contexts as distinct as East/West Germany, Britain, Sweden or Russia. There are no obvious depictions of historical events in L'Apparence et l'abîme, however, these experiences are present in all the pieces comprising the exhibition ; A common feature is their profound scepticism, and an obsession to search for connections of signs and meanings : an endeavor whose direction and discoveries remain as unpredictable, as much as its failure is always anticipated. The exhibition comprises objects, drawings, photographs, paintings and video pieces that share a fascination for the fragmentary and its allegorical potential. While certainly their art works will provide for no information at all, Sofia Hultén, Bettina Carl, Alena Meier, Wladimir Winter, Ina Bierstedt and Joergen Erkius focus on the process of translation, decoding and re-codifying, i.e. : on the instrumental character of signs. These art works' surfaces are materially simple and rather brittle, many of them, however, assume an ironic evocation of beauty. One might argue that this physical modesty is the only appropriate form of reflecting on a world full of pictorial drama, where intense conflicts of forces abound in pre-fabricated portions. If one considers the stipulation to maintain the overview an undue presumption, chosing the provisonal may be the adequate move. L'Apparence et l'Abîme is the second part of the UNITED ISLANDS TOUR 2006 (Amsterdam-Paris-Berlin),a cooperation of the independant art spaces CAPRI Berlin, P//AKT Amsterdam and Immanence space d'art Paris.
